Unheated Heart Ruby and Diamond Halo Station Necklace

A 5.029-carat heart-shaped natural ruby from Mozambique sits at the center of this necklace, framed by a halo of round brilliant diamonds in 18K white gold. Bezel-set diamonds are spaced along the chain on both sides, so the sparkle continues up the chain.

Bellerophon Gemlab identifies the ruby as natural, with no indication of heat treatment, and describes its color as vivid red "pigeon's blood" (report R-202025118, January 30, 2020). The diamonds surrounding it total 5.00 carats.

About the Ruby

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum and, after diamond, one of the hardest gemstones, so it holds its polish and wears well. Most rubies sold today are heated to improve their color. This one shows no indication of heat treatment, so its vivid red is the stone's own. Mozambique is one of the main sources of fine rubies today, and the report notes that Mozambique rubies formed some 600 million years ago.

Care

Clean it with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it with a soft cloth. Store it flat on its own so the stones don't rub against other pieces, and have the settings and clasp checked about once a year.
